It all began with one man and his wife, an idea, and an amazing amount of business acumen. Takeo Shigemitsu and his wife of Japan, in 1948, a world-class conglomerate grew from selling the simple concept of chewing gum sales. The name of Lotte came from Mr. Shigemitsu's fondness for the character of Charlotte in Goethe's "The Sorrows of Young Werther".

Since our founding in Japan in 1948, the Lotte Group has been guided by a philosophy from the perspective of the customer, searching for original concepts, and the demands of quality products. The foundation of the Group's business was erected in Japan and then expanded to South Korea. Lotte is now comprised of more than 60 affiliated companies worldwide, with a family of 38,000 employees. With our base established in confectionary, the Lotte group expanded. Lotte is vested in several other industries: Foods, Beverages, Dairy Products, Restaurants, Tourism, Construction, and Chemicals to name a few. For the 21st, century, Lotte is investing in environmental issues and information technology.

China was the original overseas host for a Lotteria fast-food restaurant in 1995. Since the debut in Tokyo, in 1972, Lotteria has become the top fast-food chain in South Korea. Currently, there are over 1,000 outlets in China, Taiwan and several other Asian countries with plans to expand to Vietnam. In Japan, the Group is developing delicatessens and bakeries combined with Lady Borden ice cream shops.

A foothold in Russia was established with Tourism and Distribution in 1988. The Moscow venture is involved in the construction of hotels, office buildings, department stores, shopping malls, and several other projects.

Research and Development is one of the centers of concentration of ideas and funds. Lotte is committed to the development of health related products for our consumers and to the improved education of health related issues. The Lotte Central Laboratory, in Japan, has developed new technologies that have created new products for the betterment of society. Advanced technologies have been instrumental in the development of a chewing gum that prevents cavities and dental related diseases. Revolutionary methods were established to blend fresh cream and fruits into chocolate and the world's first sugarless chocolate. Plus, injection technology was developed to inject chocolate and other flavors into a Koala Bear Cookie. The Lotte Central Laboratory is truly a hub of high technology.

In South Korea, the Lotte Group Research and Development nationally certified laboratory, undertakes the development of the next-generation of foods, the study of genetics, life sciences and the anticipated changes in lifestyles for the 21st century.

The distribution business is developing exponentially. This is due to the creation of a state-of-the-art logistics system build independently by the Lotte Korea Group. Lotte Shopping Co., LTD is the leading comprehensive distribution center of South Korea.
